Golden Hour Maternity Photography at Guana Reserve | Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

There are some evenings when everything comes together so beautifully—the light, the colors, the setting, and most importantly, the people in front of my camera. This recent maternity and family session at Guana Reserve in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, was one of those evenings I won't soon forget.

As a Ponte Vedra Beach maternity and family photographer, I've photographed countless beautiful sunsets along Northeast Florida's coastline, but the light on this particular evening was truly something special. The warm golden sunlight filtering through the dunes, the soft coastal grasses swaying in the breeze, and the delicate pastel colors that appeared as the sun began to set created the most romantic backdrop for this beautiful growing family.

And can we talk about these dunes? There are certain stretches of Guana's coastline that remind me so much of Hawaii. The rolling dunes, lush sea grasses, natural textures, and seemingly endless shoreline have an almost tropical beauty that feels a world away from everyday life.

It was the perfect setting to celebrate this gorgeous mama as she prepares to welcome her second baby.

With her husband and their darling little girl joining us, this maternity session became so much more than portraits of an expecting mother. It was an opportunity to document their family exactly as they are in this fleeting season, just before their family of three becomes four.

The Magic of Golden Hour at Guana Reserve

One of my absolute favorite locations for maternity and family photography in Ponte Vedra Beach is Guana Reserve, nestled along the scenic stretch of A1A between Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine.

The natural landscape is breathtaking in its simplicity. Rolling dunes, soft coastal grasses, sandy pathways, and the beautiful Atlantic shoreline provide an effortlessly elegant setting for portraits.

What I love most about Guana is that it doesn't need anything extra. The landscape is beautiful on its own, allowing the connection between the people I'm photographing to remain the focus.

And on this particular evening, the light was extraordinary.

As the sun began to sink behind the dunes, the grasses glowed in shades of sage, muted gold, and soft green. The warm backlight caught the edges of my client's hair and illuminated the delicate floral details of her dress.

Later, as we made our way toward the water, the colors shifted into the prettiest palette of blush pink, lavender, champagne, and pale blue.

That transition is one of the things I love most about photographing along the coast.

In a single session, we can create two distinctly beautiful looks: warm, golden portraits among the dunes and soft, romantic images along the shoreline as the evening light fades.

For expecting mothers searching for a Guana Reserve maternity photographer or Ponte Vedra Beach family photographer, this location offers an incredible combination of natural beauty, coastal elegance, and gorgeous evening light.

A Family of Three, Soon to Be Four

While maternity photography naturally celebrates the beauty of pregnancy, I especially love including the entire family when a second baby is on the way.

There is something so incredibly sweet about watching a little one prepare to become a big sister.

During this session, their daughter was an absolute delight. From the sweetest kisses with her mama to wrapping her little arms around her mother's growing belly, she gave us so many beautiful, genuine moments.

One of my favorite images from the evening is of this sweet little girl hugging her mama's belly while her mother's hair catches the warm sunset breeze.

It's such a simple moment, but one that tells an entire story.

I also adore the photographs of the three of them laughing together, with their little girl right in the middle. Her joyful expression is everything I love about family photography—natural, spontaneous, and full of personality.

And then there's the image of her parents swinging her between them as they walk along the beach. Bare feet, sandy toes, the ocean just beyond them, and the biggest smile on her face.

These are the moments that deserve to be remembered.

As a Ponte Vedra Beach family photographer, I always encourage families to embrace the little in-between moments rather than worrying about everyone looking perfectly at the camera.

Of course, I love a beautiful, classic family portrait. But often, it's the laughter, the movement, the little hugs, and the genuine interactions that become the most treasured photographs.

Someday, this little girl will look back at these images and see what her family looked like just before she became a big sister.

And I think that's pretty wonderful.

Romantic Maternity Dresses and Effortless Coastal Style

I have to take a moment to talk about this mama's gorgeous wardrobe because I absolutely loved both of her dresses.

For the first portion of our session, she wore the most beautiful champagne-toned maternity gown featuring delicate ivory floral lace, a softly fitted silhouette, and romantic cap sleeves.

It was absolutely perfect for the location.

The warm neutral tones complemented the sandy dunes beautifully, while the intricate lace added just enough texture and detail without distracting from the photographs.

I especially loved the way the gown photographed against the soft sage-green grasses and golden evening light.

The silhouette was so flattering, gently highlighting her beautiful baby bump while maintaining an elegant, timeless look.

Her husband coordinated perfectly in a crisp white shirt and neutral trousers, while their daughter wore the sweetest white ruffled dress with an oversized bow in her hair.

Together, their wardrobe created such a cohesive, refined palette.

For the second half of our session, mama changed into a beautiful white dress with romantic puff sleeves, a softly gathered bodice, and a flowing skirt.

The look was light, feminine, and effortlessly coastal.

As the sky shifted into soft pinks and lavender, the white dress photographed beautifully against the muted tones of the shoreline.

I particularly love the images of her walking barefoot along the beach, gently cradling her belly as the ocean breeze moves through her hair.

There's something so peaceful and beautiful about those photographs.

For expecting mothers planning their own Ponte Vedra Beach maternity photos, I always recommend choosing clothing that complements the natural surroundings.

Soft neutrals, ivory, champagne, muted blush, delicate lace, and flowing fabrics photograph beautifully along the Northeast Florida coast.

The goal isn't to look overly styled. It's to feel beautiful, comfortable, and completely yourself.

Why I Love Photographing Maternity Sessions at Sunset

Natural light has always been one of the most important elements of my photography.

I love the softness, warmth, and dimension that beautiful natural light brings to an image.

And for outdoor maternity photography, there's nothing quite like golden hour.

The hour leading up to sunset often produces the most flattering, luminous light of the day. It softens shadows, illuminates skin beautifully, and creates that dreamy, romantic quality that I love so much.

At Guana Reserve, the dunes and tall grasses offer wonderful opportunities to work with the setting sun.

I love positioning my clients so the sunlight gently filters through their hair or creates a soft glow behind them.

Those beautiful little details can make an image feel almost painterly.

As the sun dips lower, the light becomes more delicate, and the beach takes on an entirely different personality.

The pastel skies in these photographs were particularly lovely.

Soft peach, pale pink, lavender, and powder blue blended together above the ocean, creating an almost watercolor-like backdrop.

For the final portraits, I loved allowing the landscape to become part of the composition, with plenty of beautiful open sky and shoreline surrounding my client.

The result was a collection of maternity photographs that feel peaceful, feminine, and timeless.

These are the kinds of images I hope my clients will treasure for decades.

Why Maternity Photography Is So Much More Than a Beautiful Portrait

Pregnancy is such a remarkable season of life.

Whether you're expecting your first baby or preparing to welcome another child, there is so much anticipation, excitement, and emotion wrapped into those months.

And while pregnancy can sometimes feel long, the season itself passes so quickly.

One day, you're waiting to meet this tiny person you've already fallen in love with, and before you know it, you're holding them in your arms.

I believe maternity photography gives us the opportunity to pause and celebrate that extraordinary moment in between.

It's a chance to document not only the beauty of pregnancy, but also the love and anticipation surrounding a new baby's arrival.

For mothers expecting their second child, these portraits carry another layer of meaning.

They capture the final chapter of life as a family of three.

The last few weeks before your first baby becomes a big sibling. The quiet moments with your husband. The little hands reaching for yours. The sweet hugs and kisses from the child who first made you a mother.

Those details are worth remembering.

My approach to maternity photography is relaxed, natural, and intentionally timeless.

I love creating beautiful, refined portraits, but I never want the experience to feel stiff or overly posed.

Instead, I gently guide my clients while leaving plenty of room for natural movement, connection, and genuine moments to unfold.

The result is a collection of photographs that feels beautiful, but more importantly, feels like you.

From Maternity to Newborn: Documenting the Next Chapter

One of the things that makes this particular session so special is that I'll have the pleasure of photographing this sweet family again when their newest little one arrives.

They chose to book both maternity and newborn photography, and I absolutely love when families decide to document these two milestones together.

Maternity portraits capture the beautiful anticipation before your baby's arrival.

Newborn portraits preserve those first fleeting days after you've finally met.

The tiny fingers and toes. The sleepy expressions. The way your baby curls into your arms. The sweet, sometimes unpredictable moments between siblings as everyone settles into their new roles.

As a Ponte Vedra Beach maternity and newborn photographer, I love creating a cohesive collection of images that tells this story from anticipation to arrival.

For newborn sessions, I especially enjoy photographing families in the comfort of their own homes, where everything feels familiar and personal.

The beautiful natural light, meaningful details of the nursery, and relaxed interactions between family members allow us to create photographs that feel authentic and deeply personal.

I can't wait to see this sweet little girl step into her new role as a big sister and photograph the newest member of their family.

And I know these maternity photographs will become even more meaningful once their baby arrives.

Planning Your Own Ponte Vedra Beach Maternity Session

If you're expecting and considering maternity photography in Ponte Vedra Beach, Jacksonville, or St. Augustine, I recommend beginning the planning process during your second trimester.

Most maternity sessions take place between approximately 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, when your baby bump is beautifully defined and you're hopefully still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session.

For outdoor portraits, I generally recommend scheduling around golden hour, when the light is softest and most flattering.

I also love helping my clients plan their wardrobe and choose a location that complements their personal style.

Whether you envision romantic portraits among the dunes at Guana Reserve, elegant images along the shoreline of Ponte Vedra Beach, or a more intimate setting, my goal is to make the entire experience enjoyable and effortless.

For families interested in both maternity and newborn portraits, booking during pregnancy allows us to plan for both milestones in advance.
