When Should We Book a Maternity Session? | Jacksonville Maternity Photographer

If you're expecting and wondering when to book your maternity session, you're not alone. As a Jacksonville maternity photographer specializing in fine art pregnancy portraits, I hear this question all the time—and I’m so glad you’re asking. Getting the timing right ensures you look and feel your best, and it gives us the opportunity to plan a relaxed, beautiful session that truly honors this moment in your life.

Let’s walk through the ideal time to book your maternity photos, why timing matters, and how I help Jacksonville moms-to-be create timeless, elegant images they'll treasure forever.

The Best Time for Fine Art Maternity Portraits

In most cases, the best time to photograph your maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. This sweet spot is when your belly has a beautiful, round shape that photographs perfectly—but before the discomfort of those final few weeks kicks in.

Here’s a general guideline:

  • 28–30 weeks: Great for first-time moms or anyone carrying small. You’ll still have lots of energy, and your bump will be starting to pop in a photogenic way.
  • 30–34 weeks: Perfect for most expecting mothers—your belly is beautifully full and round, and you’ll likely still feel comfortable moving and posing.
  • 35+ weeks: Possible, but less ideal. If your due date is approaching, we’ll need to move quickly and plan for a shorter session to keep you comfortable.

So, when should you book your maternity session on the calendar? The best time to get in touch is during your second trimester, between 20–24 weeks. This gives us time to secure your preferred date, plan your wardrobe, and select a location that feels personal to you.

💬 Ready to start planning? Inquire about availability and session details.

Why Book Early?

As a boutique maternity photographer serving Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, I take a limited number of clients each month to ensure each session receives the care and attention it deserves. Booking early ensures:

  • You get your ideal date
  • You have first pick of locations
  • We can talk through wardrobe ideas and styling
  • You’re not scrambling late in pregnancy to schedule something meaningful

From the moment you book, I’ll help you prepare every step of the way—from what to wear to what to expect—so that your experience is effortless and enjoyable.

Don’t Worry If You’re Booking Late

If you’re already 35+ weeks and thinking “Did I miss my chance?”, the answer is no. While I recommend booking early, I’ve photographed many beautiful JAX maternity photos just weeks (or even days) before baby’s arrival.

Reach out and let’s chat—if I have space in my calendar, we can still make magic happen.

Beautiful Locations for Maternity Photos in Jacksonville

Jacksonville is full of gorgeous, natural backdrops that elevate your maternity photos into something truly special. Whether you’re envisioning soft, glowing images at golden hour or something more editorial and modern, here are a few of my favorite spots:

  • The beach – For light, airy photos with glowing skies and flowing gowns
  • Gardens and green spaces – Perfect for a romantic, timeless feel
  • Your home – Ideal for relaxed, intimate portraits that feel uniquely yours

You don’t need a studio to create fine art maternity portraits. With thoughtful styling and beautiful light, even simple settings can feel elevated and artistic.

If you’re planning ahead for both maternity and newborn photos, I also offer in-home newborn sessions that blend seamlessly with your maternity portraits—capturing the full story of your growing family.

What Is Fine Art Maternity Photography?

Fine art maternity photography is all about creating imagery that feels elevated, intentional, and timeless. It’s more than a snapshot—it's a celebration of your strength, beauty, and transformation as a mother.

With a fine art approach, you can expect:

  • Soft, flattering light that enhances your natural glow
  • Carefully guided posing for confidence and comfort
  • A focus on emotion and elegance, not trends
  • Thoughtful editing that preserves the quiet power of the moment

Every image in your gallery is delivered with care and quality, and while I don’t currently offer framed products or viewing appointments, you’ll have the flexibility to order prints, albums, and digital files directly through your gallery—whenever you're ready.
